TWO great bike rides!

Last spring sometime I heard about the Park to Park Pedal Extreme Nevada 100 bike ride the Nevada State Parks http://www.parks.nv.gov/ was organizing. I decided to start training and see if I could get myself in shape enough to ride in it. Then my daughter, Vera, heard about the 2011 Foxy's Fall Century bike ride in Davis CA http://www.davisbikeclub.org/annual_events/organized_rides/foxys_fall_century where she lives. I thought it would be fun to participate with her in that ride. I thought that if they were a couple of weeks apart or so, that I would be able to do them both. Then I found out that they were just one week apart! Each ride had various distances you could sign up for. I decided to try for the 100 mile ride in both events. I was able to finish both rides. I am continually in awe of the beauties of this great earth that we live on.

We started at Kershaw Ryan State Park. Our first rest stop was at Cathedral Gorge State Park. We then rode up to Pioche then out to Spring Valley State Park. On the way back, we rode through Echo State Park, back to Pioche and Kerhaw Ryan State Park for a great dutch oven dinner. We had a lot of challenging hills and fun down hill rides. We started out at about 4,500 feet elevation and the highest elevation we climbed to was about 6200 feet. I had great support. Ann followed me in the truck for a lot of the ride and was available to help other riders as needed. She gave me great moral support when I needed it and took some great pictures. I enjoyed riding through these areas. Of course growing up here I have been on the roads numerous times, but bike riding these roads this summer gave me the time and chance to observe the area at slower pace.

This also a beutiful ride. We had a great varity of country that we rode through. Everything from city to orchards to vinyard to tall trees etc. We started and ended our ride in Davis. Below are some pictures of the country we rode through. Vera's friend, Jill, offered to drive Ann around to the various stops to offer us moral support and take some pictures. It was a great ride.
I enjoyed the opportunity to ride with Vera. We rode together through most of the ride.

Camping at Angel Lake

August 11th thru the 13th Alma, Matti, their two kids Bella and Oliver, my Dad, Ann and I spent some time at one my favorite places Angel Lake http://publiclands.org/explore/site.php?search=YES&back=Search%20Results&id=349.

We arrived on Thursday around 3:00 PM, set up camps etc.

On Friday after breakfast, Dad and I hiked up to Smith Lake. It is above and to the north of Angel Lake. It was a good hike but well worth it. In the afternoon we all hiked around the back of Angel Lake. On the way back we took pictures of us in the same spot that my Dad took pictures of my Grandpa Green and me when I was small.

On Saturday we packed up and headed home.

It was a special treat for Ann and I to spend time with Alma, Matti, Bella, Oliver, and my Dad at one of my favorite places.

Friday Ann I decided on a quick camping trip to Beaver Dam State Park. http://www.parks.nv.gov/bd.htm. It is only about 24 miles from Caliente. We spend a little time hiking and just relaxing. I am continually amazed at the beauties of God's creations all around us.

Lincoln County Trials Day

Yesterday (June 4) Ann and I participated in Lincoln Counties National Trails Day http://lincolncountynevada.com/trailsday.html I participated in a 5K run at 7:00 am, then at 9:00 AM Ann and I participated in an ATV ride. We went south out of Caliente toward Mount Ella. We made a few stops and then a stop for lunch at the Pine Canyon Dam. (a flood control dam). We saw some beautiful county. With the better rain and snow this winter and some rain this spring the county looks great. The best we have seen in several years. We had a great time. There was one other Rhino besides ours and ten 4-wheelers on the trip.

My First 5 K Run

A couple of months ago, my sister Gina told me about a 5K run in Ivins Ut at the Tuacahn Theater. I decided to register and participate in the race. The race was yesterday March 26. It was a new experience. There were around 600 people participating. My Dad, and Gina also participated and finished the race. My time was 28 Minutes 25 Seconds. I finished 33rd Overall, 1st of the men in my age group, 19th out of the men, and 1st in my age group. Not to bad for a 58 year old that didn't even like running when I was young! It was fun and glad I am glad I participated.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANN!!

Anns birthday was on November 4. A couple of months ago, I mentioned to a couple of my kids that I wanted to do something special for her. They came up with the idea to have our whole family meet in Salt Lake for a surprise birthday party for her. We rented a vacation house for the 4th 5th and 6th. We managed to keep it a surprise. Most of the family arrived on Thursday evening. On Friday Ann and I left Caliente about 12:30. I arranged with them to meet at and Article Circle restaurant near Alma and Matti house. When we arrived and walked in I could only see Alma and Matti there. Everyone was hiding among the playground equipment. They all jumped out and surprised her. It was great to see the surprise on her face.

We had a great time visiting and eating ice cream. We then went to the rental house and visited for awhile.

On Saturday, the girls fixed a great breakfast for everyone. I keep telling Ann, my daughters and daughters-in-law that is really tough duty to be surrounded by great cooks. They all are great cooks.

The rest of the day was spend with various activities. Some went shopping, some when to Cabelas, Alma and Matti went to the U football game. Everyone enjoyed the spacious back yard playing games and visiting.

For Saturday evening we had planned another surprise for Ann. Her siblings that live in the area were invited to come at 7:00 PM. Ann and I went to the store to get ice cream and toppings for desert. While were gone they arrived.

After that Ann asked "is there anymore surprises?"

We had a great time. A great big thank you to all who made this possible.

Dutch Oven Cookoff

On September 18, Cathedral Gorge State Park http://parks.nv.gov/cg.htm , one of six state parks in our area, hosted its sixth annual Dutch Oven Cook Off. There were 20 to 25 cooks participating. We started around 3:00 pm, with judging at 5:00 pm. You can enter as many items as you want. The main requirement is that all entries must be cooked in dutch ovens. The park provides the charcoal. Many businesses in the area provide the door prizes and raffle prizes. A lot of people come to to taste and enjoy the entries.

We participated for the fourth time this year. We decided to enter Meat Loaf, Barbecue Pork, Breakfast Casserole and Pumpkin Bread. We took third place in Main Dish with the Barbecue Pork, and second place in Side Dish with the Breakfast Casserole. We won a charcoal starter for the third place prize, and a pair of dutch oven gloves and lid lifter for the second prize. We also won a new 12 inch dutch oven in the raffle.

New York

For a few years now, Ann and I have been wanting to go on a trip to Palmyra New York. With the help and encouragement from our kids,this year we finally made it. Last Christmas, as a group they gave us a one night stay in a bed and breakfast and a gift card for Flaherty's (a local restaurant in Palmyra)

We left home on on May 31st and flew to Buffalo NY arriving around 11:30 pm. and traveled to Niagara Falls. We spent most of Monday visiting many of the attractions at Niagara Falls. On Tuesday we traveled to LockPort. There is a two hour cruise of part of the Erie Canal there. We traveled back to Niagara Falls and visit some more of the sites there. I am always in awe at the beauties and wonders the Lord has created on this earth.

On Wednesday we traveled to Palmyra. We visited the Hill Cumorah visitors center for most of the afternoon. On Thursday we visited the Peter Whitmer Farm in the morning, and the Grandin Book Store and Sacred Grove in the afternoon.

We had a great time. We felt the spirit of our Heavenly Father as we contemplated the great events of the restoration of the Gospel that occurred there in Palmyra. All the missionaries were very helpful.

Our Son in Law Andrew's parents are serving a mission in Palmyra. We were able to visit and have lunch with them on Friday before we left to go back to Buffalo. We enjoyed our visit with them.

We flew back home on Saturday June 5.

We had a great time. We really appreciate the gifts our children gave us to help make this trip enjoyable.

First camping trip with new trailer

Friday and Saturday May May 14 and 15 was our annual Fathers and Sons outing. Our stake puts this on as the commemoration of the Restoration of the Priesthood. My Dad, my son Cory and his two boys Hudson and Hafen and I went. Our traditional place to go is about 7 miles up the Caliente Summit on highway 93. The stake provides a dinner and then a short program about the restoration of the Priesthood.

This year, I decided to try out our new Jumping Jack tent trailer. If you have not seen these before they are neat setup. http://www.jumpingjacktrailers.com/. We also took our Yamaha Rhino and did some exploring around the area. We had a great time.

We arrived about 5:30 pm and found a spot to set up. We unloaded the Rhino and got the tent trailer set up, and put our sleeping bags etc in. Dad and I took the Rhino out for a little while. After the dinner and program, we went back to our camp. We built a fire and had a good time visiting. Cory put the boys to bed and then he, Dad and I just sat around the fire visiting. We haven't had a chance to do this for a long time.

Saturday morning we got up, and the ward provided breakfast. We cleaned up our camp and then Dad, Cory and the boys and I went for a ride on the Rhino for awhile. I was a lot of fun. I enjoyed being out with them. We got home about 11:00 Saturday morning.

You can't see it the picture very well, but Hafen is sitting in the Rhino and holding up some flowers we picked for the boys to take home to Melissa.

Neal

As Vera mentioned on her blog, on February 10, 2010 Neal entered the Provo MTC (Missionary Taining Center) to begin his service as missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It is always an emotional time. Neal has planned for this for most of his life. Neal was to report to the Brazil MTC, however he did not receive his Visa so he was reassigned to the Provo MTC. It is anticipated that as soon has his Visa comes through he will travel to the Brazil MTC.

Ann, Neal and I traveled to Salt Lake on Tuesday, had dinner and visited with our Son Alma and daughter Jeanette and their families that evening. On Wednesday we finished some last minute things, and drove to Provo. We were to drop him off at the MTC at 1:30 pm. We arrived a little early so we walked around the Provo Temple grounds for a few minutes.

We are pleased with Neals desire to serve. We miss him, but know his is doing the work of our Heavenly Father. We wish him success in his sevice.

Mormon Mountain

My Dad has been going through a lot of the pictures he has taken over the years. He found some he had taken of a cave in the Mormon Mountains he had been to years ago. http://www.sangres.com/nevada/blm/mormon-mountain.htm. The Mormon mountains are about 40 miles south of Caliente down the Rainbow Canyon. When he showed me one of the pictures, I mendtioned that we should go back there sometime. A few days later Dad asked me when we were going. So, on Tuesday (Dec 8) we loaded my Rhino on the trailer and hooked it onto Dad's truck and off we went. The easiest way to get there is to take state and county roads down Rainbow Canyon to Carp (Carp is where Ann was first hired to teach school in 1973) then follow the Railroad south a few miles and cross over the tracks and go up into the mountain. (The county does not maintain a road south of Carp in Rainbow Canyon) Being the surveyors Dad and Cory are, they found another route to go and then climb over a mountain and down into the are where the cave is. It was noon by the time we got to the top of the mountain so we did not have time to get to the cave. We ate lunch and headed back down.

It was a great trip. I enjoyed spending the day with Dad and Cory. I wish Neal could have come also. He has a broken coller bone and could not go with us.

We unloaded the Rhino at Carp and took the truck and Rhino as far as the truck could go and then took the Rhino as far as it would go. The mountain in the back round is where we were headed.

A crazy Friday

This morning Neal and I went to Cory's house to strip.....paint off the walls in the kitchen. We started with toxic stripper (Melissa and the boys went to Monroe ). We had the house well ventilated, and started scraping paint. Grandpa Smith was there and after an hour of scraping he decided that that was too hard. He had heard that heating the paint would take it off. So he got a blow torch and proceded to heat the walls and low and behold the paint was much easier to get off.

At 11:00 Neal left us and went riding with some friends. Cory, Grandpa and I continued to work unitl about 3:00 when Cory's phone rang and Neal told him that he wrecked on his 4 wheeler and might have broken his collar bone. Cory came with me and dad had already gotten here. Neal was very dirty and shoulder's uneven. We took him to the hospital and he did break the collar bone mid shaft. He is now in a sling and will wear that for a month.

The Dr. said that he will be okay for his mission. The friends he was with were very helpful and came to the hospital to see if he was okay.

I have had a great, busy summer. The first week of June we had a Smith family reunion with our children at Heber, UT. Two weeks later Kevin and I went with Neal to Kansas City, MO for the national skills competition. The third week in July I drove to Salt Lake City to visit with Alma's family and Jeanette's family. I also got to see some of my brothers and sisters and families along with Mom. In the middle of the week I flew to Reno, NV to work on state reading curriculum. Then on July 28 I got up early to attend a workshop in Ely, NV for the Desert Research Institute. Before I left home Jeanette called to tell me that she was going to have the babies. I drove to Ely to give my excuse for not attending and on to Salt Lake City, UT. It was a rush trip but I missed the delivery of the twins by 30 minutes. I stayed with Jeanette for a day and then came home.

A couple of weeks after that Kevin went to a church farm committee meeting near Ely and then went on to SLC to meet the twins. At the end of August I then went to SLC again to help Jeanette and Jeff when the twins came home from the hospital.

In between trips; I had jury duty, watched grandchildren, went to the dentist and cleaned house some.

On Labor day after seeing the parade in Pioche, Kevin, Neal, I and a friend of Neal's took the Rhino and 4 wheeler to Ella Mt. lookout tower. It was a fun ride and we sure enjoyed the day.

National Skills usa,

This week (June 22ND-27Th) I (Neal) and My mom and dad had the opportunity to go to Kansas city to participate in National Skills USA. I went for cabinetmaking, The competition goes like this, at 7:30 AM they took all the contestants up to the competition area and showed us all what was at our work stations and showed us how to run some of the newer machines there, and they also had a finished cabinet of what we were suppose to build. They let us look at that for maybe 5-10 minutes and then gave us some plans and we went to our work stations and from the plans we had to fill out a "cut list" (which is a list of every single part and we had to fill in how long and wide and thick and how much of every part there is on this cabinet) Then once we got that all filled out we turned it in and we went to work. All together this contest was about 8 hours long, with a 30 minute lunch break, and it took about 30 minutes to fill out the cut list. So really every competitor had 7 hours to build and extremely difficult cabinet. But once it was all over I felt really good on how I did and I figured that I would place fairly high. Well there was 43 competitors and I placed 18TH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dang good for being at Nationals. It was an amazing experience to be there and be around some of the best skilled people in high school and talk to them and to meet alot of newe people. I am very grateful for mom and dad for the money they spent for us to be able to go there. And for them going too. It was really fun to be with them and I have wanted them to see me work ever since my first year of skills usa, so finally they were able to. So here are some pictures of the whole thing.

High School Graduation and Family Reunion

On May 29, our youngest son, Neal graduated from Lincoln County High School. This is the same high school that I (Kevin) graduated from 3 or 4 years (decades) ago. All of our children except Alma and his family were able to attend. Congratulations Neal!

On Sunday after graduation all of our children and their familes (25 people in all) met in Heber City Utah for a family reunion. We had a great time visiting, playing games, eating, and visiting some of the local attractions. We rode down the Alpine Slide one day and rode the Heber Train another day and rafted down the Provo River another day. We had a great time. A great big thank you to all who made this possible.

So every year there is race in Calinete put on by SNORE (Southern Nevada Off Road Enthusiast) and well this year I (Neal) was looking on their web site and thought I would ask and see if anyone would let me co-ride a lap at this race. Well this guy e-mailed me back and said that he would let me co-ride a lap. Well this race was this past weekend (May 9Th.) Well I made it through safe and I had a great time. I wasn't able to take my camera on the ride but mom and dad got pictures of me climbing and getting strapped in for the ride, then pictures of coming down the final hill behind the stores in Caliente. In all but the last picture I am in the Bronco.

Vica/ Skills Usa

Well this year skills usa was in reno again and once again I competed in cabinet making again this year ( my third year.) Last year I took fifth place and was getting exited for this year. On thursday we woke up at 5:30 to get all our showers and head down to the bus to go find something to eat, well every place was closed!! So we just headed down to the place where this contest was held at. This year was a complete different cabinet then the past couple years. Last year's did not have a draw, just a door and a adjustable shelf (this years had one too.) All together there was four kids from our school working, and 18 people started but only 16 stayed and worked the whole time. (two girls droped out a hour into working!!) But anyways after eight hours of hard thinking and working, they told us to put our tools down and move our cabinets (completed or not) down to these tables. We stayed a little after to look at all the cabinets and there was only three finished!!! (last year almost everyone finished that shows how hard this years was.) the ones that finished were a kid from elko high school, and Ivan Ortiz from our school, and me. Well that were the three that got medals!!! The elko kid took third, I took second, and Ivan took first!!!!!!!! It is pretty amazing that our school took first and second, I still think I am dreaming!! But anyways, so we got some prizes for wining and Ivan get's to make a trip to kanas city to compete in another competiton there agianst all the other gold medal winners in the united states. It so cool!!!!!!!!!!! But anyways here is some pictures of everything.

General Conference

Last weekend Ann, Neal and I traveled to Salt Lake City for General Conference and to visit Alma, Mattie and Family, and Jeanette and Jeff. We traveled up on Saturday arrived in time to attend Ann's Sister Karens Easter Egg Hunt. Most of Anns family that lives around Salt Lake were there. Many of them we had not seen for some time. It was a great time. Saturday Evening, Ann, Jeanette and Matti went out to dinner while Alma, Neal, Jeff and I went to the Priesthood session then we went to dinner. We had tickets to the Sunday afternoon session so Ann, Neal and I traveled to downtown on the Trax and watched the morning session in the tabernacle and then attended the afternoon session in the Conference Center. When we got back to Jeanette and Jeff's house they had the news on TV. The station had a report on the afternoon session of conference. To our surprise we were in the report!!.

Well past two years I (Neal)have been in a club called vica ( also called skills usa) And I entered a cabinet making competition and have done pretty well (last year I took fifth place out of maybe 15 or so) And the cabinet we build is a good looking cabinet and well Joe has asked for me to build him one and now that I finished the table and some other really small projects I built this one. It only took me just about a week and a half to do this. There is a door that goes on it but we didn't have hinges for it so we will get some later and put it on.

On Friday Marie and Joe and there kids came over and on Saturday Joe and Cory helped us put the rest of the shed together. It was real nice weather that day and was a blast working all together. It only took us about 6-7 hours to get the whole back done. Cory had to go home after lunch and get some studying done, we could tell a big difference in how slow it was going without the extra guy there. Thanks so much Joe and Cory for coming over and helping us, we couldn't have done it that quick with out everyone there helping us.

Well dad and I (Neal) worked on the shed most the day and got the whole front part of the shed done. It looks really nice, now next week Joe And Marie are coming down and we can hopefully get the back all done. that will be really nice then. Can't wait to see it all done.

Brenda and Andrews stools!!

Well when I was done with the woodworking with Jeanette and Jeff's table I decided to work on Brenda and Andrew's three stools. It was the simplest one and decided to build them first. In total it took me four days to totally complete them!! I stayed after school two days then one day during school I stayed in there a total of 2.75 hours!! I was a little bored that day. Then walla I was done!! Update on Jeanette and Jeff's table, I ran out of lacquer for the table :( but Dad and I will be going to St. George to get a couple more gallons then it should only take a week or week and a half to finish it. It has been fun learning all these new things with the table and well I have built these stools before so nothing new there, but good to always do a small quick job just for a change of pace. So here are pictures of the stools ( pictures coming soon of the table, Trust me it looks amazing!!!!!!)

Meeting Oliver

Last Weekend (January 17 to 19) Ann, Neal, and I traveled to Salt Lake to meet our newest grandson Oliver Comfort Smith and to visit with Alma, Matti, Bella, Jeanette, and Jeff. We had a great time.

Oliver even noisily filled his diaper while Neal was holding him. Thank goodness it all stayed in his diaper.

Ann, Neal, Jeanette, Jeff and I went to the Tabernacle Choir Broadcast on Sunday Morning. It always a treat to attend the broadcast in person. Ann, Neal and I attend church with Alma and Matti then we all had dinner at Alma and Matti house.

Well a while back ago my english teacher, Mrs. McHenry told us that there was a poetry contest coming up and we had to write two poems for it in order to get credit in her class. So being the not so good poet I am, I asked Melissa to help me out with it. Well about a week and a half ago Mrs. Mchenry announced the winners. There were alot of them, and I was one of them. Well I guess I should say Melissa's poem is published with my name on it. Thanks SOOOOOOOOO much Melissa!!!!! I owe you big time for this one!! So I decided to put it on the blog so everone could read it. Once again thank you so much for helping me!!

Thoughts of Thanksgiving

When I think of Thanksgiving
I think of many different things.
I think of football, cool nights,
And colors that fall brings.
I imagine the Pilgrims and Indians
That gathered together for peace
It must have been a beautiful moment
An instant when troubles did cease.
Did they feel as blessed as I do,
When my family gathers near?
I’m filled with peace and gladness
To celebrate with those who are dear.
For my family means the most to me
I think of them often each day.
And enjoy this time
To spend to visit, laugh, and play.
Of all the memories I have
Thanksgiving is some of the best.

Jeff and Jeanette's Table

It's not quite done yet but I figured I would give an update. I sometimes stay after school for a couple hours to get some really good work time on it. Today (Tuesday) was one of those days!! I was able to get the leafs for it all done I just have to align everything now and Sand and sand some more then sand SOME MORE!! HA HA. Well in other words I have probably about a week or so worth of sanding to do!!! But I am hoping (fingers crossed) that it will be maybe another week or two till I can get it done. Depends on how much I am able to stay after some more. So here are some pictures of it!!! The first one is with all the leafs in!! Total length with leafs in 8 feet!

So after a week of snow and a week of riding the four wheeler everyday I remembered to take pictures. Dad took some pictures on thursday of when it snowed over 4 or so inches in one night. On friday I went up to a hill that someone is trying to put a house development on. With my new camera Mom and Dad gave me for my brithday I took some pictures.

Senior ball

Well December 13Th came and Bonnie Clark and I headed over to St. George. After meeting two of her sisters and shopping a little, We ate lunch then headed over to her sisters house so Bonnies sister could do her hair for the dance. I was just sitting there waiting and one of Bonnies twin sisters (Rachel) Friend came over and picked Rachel up to go repelling they asked me if i wanted to go so I said sure why not. So we went it was a blast. I knew a storm was coming in and wanted to head home earlier but Bonnie wanted to stay still exactly four so I waited. As we were driving back I saw where exactly the storm was it was just a question of when we would meet it. We ran into the storm about Veyo. Traffic slowed to about 20-25 mph all the way to enterprise. We pulled into the gas station in enterprise to see if the weather would let up. So after some waiting ( it was about 30 minutes) i decided to try it. Yeah it was so slippery I couldn't even get out of the parking lot. So i pulled back in and I called mom and dad and Bonnie called her brother and sister and they said stay there and they would come pick us up in there four wheel drive truck. So after sitting in the gas station/ store for about 2 and a half hours. They showed up. The senior ball promenade started at nine and we pulled in Panaca about 9:30 so we decided to skip it a) we were not really ready for it. b) by the time we got to Caliente got changed then headed back it would be over. So we went to Bonnies house and tried to watch a movie but I had a hard time staying awake, so I headed home. But the next day for church she wore her dress and I wore my tux, and after wards we took some pictures. So here they are.

Christmas Tree Hunting

Yesterday (December 13) Mom (Ann) and I (Kevin) decided to take the Rhino up toward Mount Elly to find a Christmas Tree. We knew a storm was coming in later in the day, so we left around 8:00 am. We ended up going all the way up to Mount Elly. It is a beautiful view from up there. We enjoyed the ride and found our Christmas Tree.

On the way up, there is this beautiful stand of ponderosa Pines.

I never cease to be amazed at the beauty of Gods creations.

"Fun" Saturday

Saturday November 15, 2008
I (Kevin) wanted to get some work done on the garage we are building. Mom (Ann) and I had not been to the temple for awhile and need to get some things. Cory wanted Neal to help get some firewood. So, we figured that Mom and I would leave early (4:00 am) and get back hopefully by noon, by then Cory and Neal should be back from hauling wood and we could work on the garage for awhile. Not long after Mom and I got back, Neal called and said that the battery had died on the truck and that Grandpa (Lenard) was going to come up to hep them. I decided to ride up there with him. Grandpa and I got back around 2:30. I did some work on the garage. Around 3:15 we received another call from Neal. He said they were on the way in and that Cory had "nicked" him with the chainsaw. They were sawing down a tree when the saw kicked back onto his leg. When they got home, we looked at the wound and knew he definitely would need stitches (it was more than a nick) We took him to the emergency room and Dr Katchke put 29 stitches below his left knee. If the cut had been a little higher he would have got the Patella tendon and that would have need surgery. He did Nick the bone but not bad enough to worry about. All in all he was fortunate it was not worse. We are grateful for that. If you want pictures just email Neal and he will send you some.

Neal had a couple of poems he need to write for English class. For one of them he had to use four words, Hazardous, bodacious, shizzle and sizzle. Sunday evening he went to Cory and Melissa house for them to help with the poems. Following is the one they come up about the accident.

Just Another Day

It started out, just another bodacious day
Of chopping wood, “Great fun,” I might say.
I soon discovered we shouldn’t be there
For problems arose… more than our share.
Past days of chopping wood have just flown,
But today the saw had a mind you might call its own.
Once we stopped sawing, the saw wouldn’t start
For at least an hour, though, that wasn’t the worst part.
The saw started once again and we worked some more
To the sound of the saw’s very loud roar.
We felt good for just a moment, or less
For we soon found we were in quite a mess.
The battery in the truck was really dead,
Not a sizzle, or a spark. “Oh great”, I said.
For I was with my brother and his 3-year old kid,
Under the covers that morning I should have hid.
That’s not the worst part yet you see,
A hazardous event was waiting for me.
The saw was on and running once more,
It was cutting our final tree, and then I swore.
“Oh shizzle”, was something I might have said
I thought “At least I’m not yet dead.”
For it grazed my gigantic leg you see,
It was supposed to have gotten the tree!
We rushed down to the emergency room
Then we waited for the doctor who came pretty soon.
Lucky for me there would be no surgery
Though, I wasn’t yet home free, you see.
Twenty-nine stitches just under my knee.

This year I decided to ask a girl to the homecoming dance, so after asking around someone told me I should ask this girl who moved here this year. Her name is Bonnie. So I got together with two of my friends Cody and Dylan, and together we planned a date. We took our rhino and Cody and Dylan and there dates, Britt and Erika, took a friends four seater rhino up to saw mill canyon which is going up towards mount Ella. They packed some 22 pistols and we took some cans and shot those up. Then ate lunch and dinked around up there for a little and then came back and did some more stuff around here and then took them home and went to the dance. So here are some pictures of us and the group. I don't have any pictures of the days events sorry about that.

LEAUGE CHAMPS!!!

Well the regular football season is over now with the lynx's in first place with a record of 6-1. I (Neal) have held up pretty well this season, even though i have re-hurt my ankle again, but it is feeling pretty good now and I have not missed a game, so that I am proud of. So now it's playoff time our first game will be against mountain view in panaca. Then if we win that game the next week we play either battle mountain or whittel ( schools in the north) but either way we will play in panaca because we are the #1 team in the south. Then if we win that we will go to state which will be November 22ND, in Las Vegas. So this is quite the way to end my final season playing high school football. So to conclude this post I will post a couple pictures of some of the games. I am number 68 if you can see me in any of these.

We have a couple of posts we need to do..I am really late in posting about our shed we are in the process of putting up. For the last few years when it comes to tilling the garden in the fall, I think I should put a shed here to cut down on weed control etc. This last spring we finally decided to build the garage. After studying several options, we decided on a metal building. We had a local contractor pour the cement. The building was delivered in early July. On October 11, some brethren from the ward, Cory, Neal and Marie and Joe and Family came over for a work party to put up the garage. We would have finished with all the arches except we were missing one piece. Then a week later, with those that come home for our high school home coming Neal, Cory, Joe, Andrew, Jeff and I tightened up a lot of the bolts. I really appreciate all who have helped with this. With my shoulder problems and surgery this summer, it has been hard for me to do a lot on this project. The last couple of days, we finished the last arch, and tightened all the bolts. Now we have the endwalls to do.

Half Way Through

Well Lincoln county high schools football team is now half way through the football season. (not counting playoffs or state) Our team is doing really well we are 1-2 in preseason. (one win and two loses for those who don't know) and 2-0 in regular season. I (Neal) have been holding up very well until last game. It was just about half time and white pine scored and they were kicking off. Well the kick came right to me and I tried catching the ball, and being the line men that I am I dropped it!! So I ran to recover it and as I was diving for it a bunch of people tried to dive for it and one happened to land right into my ankle and re-spraining it. For those that don't know last year, about 3 weeks before the season ended, during practice a kid was thrown and happened to land right on my ankle spraining it. So after a lot of work, physical therapy and stuff to keep that from happening well it happened again. But being the small school we are and not having very good backups for my position will probably have to play with it this week and the rest of the season most likely unless something else REALLY messes it up even worse. So right now I'm just praying for the best and hoping that I can finish out the season.

Guys Weekend

Last week (August 8th to the 9th my dad, two of my sons (Alma and Cory), my sons-in-law (Joe, Andrew, and Jeff) and three grandsons ( Tyler, Hafen, and Keagan) gathered in the Fish Lake National Forest for our annual guys weekend. A great time has had by all. This is the first time that Jeff and Keagan has been with us. I am glad you came. We missed Neal who stayed home making some extra money. Everyone enjoyed fishing, eating, snacking, visiting, cooking eating, snacking, fishing etc, visiting etc etc. (Notice, I said nothing about pedicures etc.) One special moment for me (Kevin) was after supper Friday night, everyone surprised me with A&W root beer floats for my birthday (39th +) Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness. I am continually amazed at the beauty of the earth. Heavenly Father truly created many beautiful places on this earth.

Camp helaman- sorry a little late

I, Neal, participated in a camp that is strictly a church camp and is pretty much a missionary training program. It started June 25 and it went through the 28Th. It was a really good camp and at first I thought it was going to be boring and just be like a regular scout camp, But it was so much better then any of the scout camps I have been to before. It seemed like as soon as you got to the camp you immediately felt the spirit and it was just amazing how strong it was. At this camp they have what is called a C.O.P.E. course, which is just some stuff to help teach team work and also to get a break from sitting and looking in scriptures. It was so much fun and it really built my testimony and you could see it in everyone from the first day we had a tiny testimony and you can tell by the last day at our final testimony meeting you can tell a big increase in every one's testimony and there actions and it was so much fun!

A note from Dad, Mom and I attended parents night on Friday night. We are reelly glad we went. We could feel the spirit as soon as we got out of the car. We eat supper there. Then all the young men and their leaders changed into white shirts for a testimony meeting. It was great to see a change in Neal. He bore a strong testimony as did most of the boys. Afterwards we went to Neal's Zone camp and had a devotional. All of us, including had the oportunity to bare testimony agian. A great experience!

BSU football camp!!

On June 14Th at 5:00 am 22 football kids and all there gear some how fit into 4 cars and headed to Boise, Idaho for a football camp. We got there about 2:00, I think, met up with another player that flew in and got checked in . Got moved into our dorms at the campus there and ate a little dinner and from then pretty much the same routine football in the morning then relax then football again. Except on Tuesday the 17 we went through the normal stuff but in the afternoon some other teams went to a water park close by but we stayed scrimmaged a little bit then went to Brenda and Andrews for a little BBQ. (you can check out pictures of that on their blog.) I figured we should put up some pictures of the actual camp its self and show you a little of what went on.

New Toy

Last week, I (Kevin) saw a poster about a yard sale in Panaca. There was a Rhino with a trailer on the list of items. So, Saturday Alma, Cory Neal and I took a trip to Panaca to check it out. I fully expected the Rhino to be gone before we got there. It just so happened that it was still there. We took it for a test drive, I called Mom and decided to get it. We have had some fun with it already.

For Neals' last project in woods I had him make some plaques, one for each of our children. Here is a picutre of how it turned out.

Memorial Weekend

As Matti said, Alma, Matti and Belle were here for the weekend. We enjoyed having them here. The kids enjoyed the parade ran right behind our house. They also enjoyed swinging and playing outside.

My brothers oldest son, Loren and his family was here for the weekend also. We enjoyed getting to know them a little better. We also enjoyed a dutch oven dinner at my Dad's house.

First off I (Neal) found out Thursday after school that I now have a summer job with the Lincoln county power district. I start June 2ND, from 6:30 to 2:30. Then right after I found that out that mom and I went to the clinic and had my in-grown toe nail removed so today (Friday) we removed the bandage and decided to show you my

wonderful toe.

I immediately would like to apologize to those the are "grossed out" by this.

So Saturday was a busy day between dune buggy races here in Caliente and working between Cory's place and here we got a lot accomplished. So Marie done be sad but we took out your rose bushes you planted a long time ago. Also we put some new sprinklers in Cory's yard and just had a busy but fun day. All in all Dad and I (Neal) got sun burnt a little but accomplished a lot throughout the day!!

Vica/ Skills Usa

On Monday April fourteenth I (Neal), with 12 other students headed up to Reno, Nevada for a competition called VICA. We got to the circus circus (where we were staying) about 8:00 and just explored ordered some pizza and relaxed. The next morning I got up about 6:00 along with three other kids to head down to our place where we were suppose to take our seeding test for a competition called quiz bowl. Which is just like Jeopardy but were in teams. So after that we went straight to another meeting for what seemed like 3 hours but was only 2 hours. Then finally got some lunch (which I was STARVING because I didn't have any breakfast) and right after that went and found out when we were going to compete in our quiz bowl. When we found out we only had like 40 minutes till we were going to compete so we waited down there and then finally got to our turn, with 4 other teams. After it ended we got a whomping score of 1 yeah we were completely last. Well after that we were free to do what ever we wanted so me being so tired I took a short 15 minute nap, being rudely awakened by my room mate jumping on top of me. After he did that we walked around watched some circus acts then that was the end of that day. The next morning I happened to wake up around 3 o'clock in the morning looking at the clock of course my eyes deceived me and I thought it was 6 o"clock. Thinking I was almost late for breakfast got a quick shower got into my work clothes for my cabinet making competition and almost headed out my door when my room mate said, "what are you doing in 3:30 in the morning. So I laid in in bed for about 10 minutes then falling asleep and waking up all ready to go eat some breakfast!! The cabinet making competition went good, I was actually able to finish the cabinet this year and it looks great. Even though i didn't get a medal I am still proud of my cabinet. Then Thursday after our awards ceremony we booked it out of there and headed home, getting home about 9:15 I crashed in my bed sooooooooooo glad to be in my own bed!!

Well It came time for the Junior prom and thanks to a little pushing and alot of help from Melissa to ask a girl, I had a date, Jaycie Cluff. So Saturday came and Maicah LeBaron, Jeremy Barfield, Jaycie's cousin and her boyfriend Chris and Kym, Jaycie and I went to St. George first we went bowling which was a joke (no one scored above 95) Jaycie and I were the lowest at 37 and 40 (Yeah she beat me.) Then we ate at Panda express YUKKK!!!! but I put up with it anyways. Then we watched 10,00 B.C. Then came home. Then after a while went to the prom. So here is some pictures.

On wednesday February 27 Neal had a band concert in Panaca. So us knowing how much Hafen loves to see Neal play the drums we decided to take him up there. When the high school band got done playing their first song as there band teacher Mr. Lester got up and as he was putting his hands up to start the band Hafen started to say 1,2,3 and Mr. Lester turned around and teased Hafen a little bit. So it was really fun to have Hafen up there and make some people laugh.

RYLA!!!

About three weeks ago dad (Kevin) called me (Neal) and asked me if I remembered when Jeanette went to RYLA (Routary youth leadership awards) and I was a little hesitant to say yes or no so I just decided to say yeah and well i got sinned up. All the time I was kind of dreading and thinking that it is gonna be so boring and just sit there and do nothing. Well the time came and Thursday (February 21st) at around 3:45 a lady named Rhonda Bradshaw picked me up and another girl from here (Savannah Beard) and drove down to Las Vegas. After some trouble finding the house that I was suppose to stay at we finally got there and so was the family that Savannah stayed with was there too. After talking for a little that family left and left one kid there that was a "senior counselor" and me. So the family I stayed with made home made pizza and it was YUMMY!!! The kid name Isiris and I realized that we had so much in common. We realized that both of play football and run track and his sophomore year he dislocated his collar bone just like I did my freshman year, but he is a year older than me so it was the same year, And talking till about 10:30 we decidided to go to bed since we had to be up at 3:00 in the morning. After getting some sleep and getting up at 3:00 the guy that we stayed with drove us to the bus and got loaded on and headed off about 4:15 with a bunch of other Las Vegas kids.. After traveling 5 and a half hours finally got to the camp. It was a little rainy that day off and on and as we got our stuff off the bus and loaded into u-hauls which drove our lugage to our dorms. After loading it up they told everyone to go to the gym and find out city and continent, they seperated every one into groups of 8-10 and named that group a city from around the world, I ended up getting into the group called Hong Kong. And continent by continent they sent us to lunch after getting to know each other and that is when it all started.
The weather was wacky but kind of nice. When we got there it rained a little there a little here and off and on all day but drissled most the day. The next day it was sunny all day long and just a wonderful day. Then we woke up on sunday and down pouring all day. Good thing we didn't stay another day or else we would have gotten snowed in. Hey Everyone,

After all the blood sweat and tears, maybe not tears. We have finally done it we are all done!!! We worked from about 9:00 A.M. To about 4:00 P.M. on Saturday to complete it . We realized that the only old stuff left in the bathroom is the shower a light switch and the door so it's pretty exiting. So we just took a video of it to show everyone.

California Trip!!!

Hey Everyone,

To start off the most reason we went to California was because Shawn (Vera's boss) and his family was gonna go on vacation so he hired Neal to go work with Vera for the week. So Kevin and Ann decided they wanted to go to San Francisco and explore Alcatraz while there. It was a fun week even though the funeral home was REALLY slow Vera and Neal had a fun time working with each other and Neal learned a whole lot from Vera teaching him and showing him stuff to do. So we decided to go ahead and post some pictures.

All in all we had a really fun time and we would like to thank Vera for letting us stay at her house and everything she did for us.

Bathroom Remodel

Finally Mom and dad decided to remodel the old bathroom. So Dad took thursday off of work to get started and when Neal got home from school he finished taking off all the old sheetrock. Friday Neal and dad took of work and school to sheetrock the bathroom and got almost all of it done Friday. So Saturday while Neal went to Cory and Melissas to get two more pieces of sheetrock left over there Dad finished getting the stuff that he could get done with pieces he had. When Neal came back he came back with Cory, Melissa, Hafen, and Hudson. While Neal, Dad, and Cory finished up the bathroom Melissa and Mom made apple sauce and made some other pumpkin stuff. With of course the help of Hafen helping on both sides. So Thursday through saturday we go alot of stuff done so we decided to post some pictures. We will post more when we get it all done.

Kevin and Neal go on ambulance run with Ann

Saturday afternoon we went to Panaca to watch the volleyball games. Into the 3rd game Ann's pager goes off for a call down Rainbow canyon. We thought that others would be answering the call but a few minutes later the pager goes off again. So we headed south. Kevin drove about 90 miles an hour and when we got to Caliente no one was at the ambulance barn. After a few phone calls we that Kevin and Neal would go on the ambulance with Ann.
It took 35 minutes to get the 18 miles to a one car off the road and on fire. The fire department was there with 1 EMT, and two more came after the ambulance. There were 3 men in a truck they hit a rock on the side of the narrow road and it knocked them off the road into a tree. They were all wearing seat belts but the car caught on fire. The driver helped get the other two out. The one in the back seat was badly hurt. The drive and one passenger got up the 50 foot embankment.
One of our PA's and an RN were farther down the canyon scouting out a place to rock climb when they saw the smoke.
The fire department and those two were down by the creek helping with the men when we arrived. They were requesting supplies so Kevin and Neal when down with the stuff. Ann stayed up top and helped one of the other men and handle things there.
After a while Kevin helped them bring the man up the hill and Neal was loaded with the equipment.
Kevin rode up front in the ambulance while Neal and Ann were in the back with 2 patients. Kevin kept times and mileage record and Neal got some learning experience. It took about 45 minutes to get back to the hospital. One man was flighted out on helicopter, one(the driver) was taken to Pioche to jail and one was released later.
It was a good experience for Neal and Kevin to see what Ann does, to see how she handles the ambulance.

Playoff Game

Hey Everyone,

We thought we would update you on the Lynx game on Friday November 2. The Lynx started out slow with a couple of turnovers and missed tackles in the first half. Leaving the score 14-0 at halftime in favor of Meadows. The Lynx came out of halftime fired up and ready to go, scoring a touchdown on their first possession. Then The Meadows fumbled on the kickoff and the Lynx took advantage of that and scored that drive to tie it 14-14. Both teams struggled after that to move the ball and went into overtime. Now in over time in high school, they start with a coin toss and the team can either defer or take the ball. The ball is put on the 10 yard line with four plays to score. So Meadows won the toss and choose to defer so the Lynx took the ball on the 10 yard line and scored from there. The Meadows scored after that making it 21-21. So in the second overtime Coach Ottley wanted to start on defense so the Meadows barely scored on fourth down with the extra point made it 28-21. After that the lynx moved the ball quickly and on fourth down fell a yard short. So The Meadows won it in double overtime 28-21. This football season

The Lynx have (5-3) had a pretty good season. Their first game was a blow out against west wendover, 54-0 Next game was a struggle against enterprise, 31-28. Just a little side note, they should have gone into overtime but the refs plus the people running the clock were just not on cue. Next game they got back together and won against milford, 35-0. The next game they played was against beaver dam arizona and won, 55-8. Next game was a little diffrent then when they played West Wendover before, but still won, 59-28. Then the week after that was time for homecoming which most everyone was there when they dominated White Pine 63-0. Next game was a struggle when they went to The Meadows and barely lost, 28-20. And also lost some players for a couple of weeks, Dutch Barklay when he dislocated his elbow, and Neal to a twisted ankle in the fourth quarter, but both of them are fine after a couple of weeks of rest. Next game was also a struggle against Needles, 40-13. Still with Dutch and Neal out. But now they are all ready for playoffs.

Hey Everyone,

For our first blog we would like to notify everyone that the Lincoln County Lynx have made it to the playoffs. Their first game is November 3, @ The Meadows in Las Vegas at 1:00. So if any one wants to try to make it down there it will be fun.

But anyways as most of you know we travled to Boisie for a football camp in the summer so we decided to post some pictures of that.
